what are some good ways to advertise a new house cleaning business? How do I compete with larger companies?

I would like to hear input on some different ways to market my new small business, that doesn't cost a fortune.

1. craigslist and go to highrise buildings and ask the doorman if you can place a flyer in the mailroom or laundry room.
2. Not to may people are going to call on you for services if they don't know you. You need to do things for people that know you & refer you to people they know. Do a super job at a fair price & the word will go out. Word of mouth works best for some one like that. Check with apartment owners & see if they need some one to clean vacant apartments. Once the word is out you won't lack for things to do.
