I've decided to open up a pit bull rescue organization. Question:How do I get grants to start the business?
After watching Animal Cops I've become sad seeing how the pit bulls that people made fight are being put down because the automatically assume their going to be aggressive towards people. I have a spunky pit bull who was dog aggressive when I bought her, but with a little discipline and love she's gotten to the point where she now plays with all dogs. What hurt the most is seeing a 4month old puppy be put down because the owner made her fight. At only 4 months. So instead of just sitting and watching and thinking about doing something to help, Im GOING to help. I would like to start a pit Bulll rescue organization where we not only find foster homes but also help get the dogs therapy and have a shelter with large kennels with toys andtrainingn sessions. Unlike the average shelters where their in little metal cages or a little cubby sort of thing, where they have 1 tore up toy and shredded newspaper. Can anybody please give me information on how to start this business and information on what grants to apply for? Thank you so much Im also in Detroit, Michigan

- i agree any animal can be "trained" or cured of misbehavior but the trainer needs a lot of time and patience and defensive preparation. GET extensive training on doing what you want to do with harmless dogs first and when you become an expert, then set up on county property, a mini dog "behavioral"center. if you can "fix" one dog, there will be others available for you; i am sure the "pound" will also provide animals for you after you prove your skills. congrats.
- You don't say where you are located. I did a quick search for "pit bull rescue" and found there are quite a number of regional pit bull rescue organizations. So that could be your first step - to find if there is a local rescue/rehab for pit bulls located near you where you can volunteer and see the "best practices" for such an operation. You will be so much better able to perform your mission if you have a background in actually performing the work necessary. You can always call and ask to speak to them about what specifics you need to know if you do decide to pursue this on your own, or if there is no such organization in your area - it might be easier and more efficient to found a chapter of an established rescue organization than to start your own from the ground up.
