Is there a way I can get some financial assistace while starting my small business?

I am recently laid off due to lack of work for the contracting business I was working for, I was paid as a sub so I can't get unemployment insurance, I am looking to start doing hardwood flooring on my own I have all tools and jobs starting to come slowly but surely, but I have heard you can get money while starting a business. Also, are there any grants or anything for people starting a small business?
